US Government data

GeoNames / GNIS — place names, Points of Interest, and features.

NGA Foreign GeoNames and USGS Domestic GNIS produce the Geographic Names datasets used worldwide for place names, points of interest, and geographic features. Tech Maven processes and optimizes this for handsets — including true offline AOI packages, monthly refreshes, and a custom Geo Request API.

  • Optimized offline-capable formats (vector tiles + GPKG)
  • Custom database and Geo Request API
  • Audio pronunciations for foreign place names
  • Toggle GeoNames on/off — show/hide with the map controls

Nine categories

We divide the data into nine feature classes.

04Streets, Highways, Roads, Railroads
05Hypsography — land features
06Vegetation
07Hydrographic — water features
08Undersea
09Spot

This database has over 18 million points.

Large, full screens — the same clarity you’d expect from a modern product page.

Display control

GeoNames can be turned off

Keep the map clean when you need terrain only, then bring names back with one toggle. Choose which feature classes stay visible, and let zoom control how dense the labels get.

  • One-tap show / hide for GeoNames
  • Per–feature-class visibility
  • Zoom-aware label density

Filter by Feature Class

Narrow the map and search to the classes that matter for the mission — from Administrative and Populated Places through Spot features. Turn the rest off and keep focus on the AOI.

  • All nine GeoNames classes
  • Mission-focused filtering
  • Works with map + search together
Filter GeoNames by feature class

Designation codes

Filter by Feature Designated Lookup

Go deeper than the nine classes — airports, border posts, military sites, places of worship, and more. For USA GNIS we standardize to the nine feature classes so domestic search stays consistent.

  • Designation-code precision
  • Spot-class power searches
  • USA GNIS standardized to 9 classes

On-map details

View Information Box

Keep context on screen while you pan. The information box stays tied to the selected GeoNames record so you can compare nearby features without losing the detail pane.

  • Persistent detail while navigating
  • Compare nearby places quickly
  • Built for briefing-speed checks

Vicinity queries

GeoNames Spatial Search

Search by name, feature class, and designation — then constrain results from map center so you only see what’s in the current country / vicinity / AOI, not a worldwide dump of lookalikes.

  • Name + class + designation filters
  • Spatial search from map center
  • Country / vicinity scoped results

Feature class + designated codes + spatial.

Military bases · Installations · Military schools
Border crossings · Customs checkpoints
